Cyberpunk is a branch of the science fiction genre. Its main focus is on advanced technology and it generally has a main character that is considered insignificant to his surroundings. It tends to take place in the near-future while on Earth instead of far future settings in space. It involves crime-dramas and investigations of murderers.

This book shows cyber-punk because Gully Foyle is the main character of the novel and is established as a "Low-life". All of his superiors consider him to be dumb and animal-like within his thoughts. The Stars my Destination also uses very advanced technologies and ideas; such as jaunting, and ideas that richer families are able to purchase their own spaceshuttle because people live on other planets. There are also satellites that are suspeneded within the gravitational pull of the planets. This story can easily be considered a crime-drama because of the crime thats happening and the drama it causes. The crime involved would be the deeds Gully does like killing several people within the prison of Gouffre Martel and the acts he commits to get the $20,000,000 on the Nomad.

This book also shows non-cyber-punk qualities because the settings are in 2400s which is far-future. Cyber-punk however takes place close to the time frame of the author within approximatley 100 years. In a cyber-punk novel, technology is used in ways that the inventor could not have possibly anticipated. However in Stars my Destination, the galaxy has yet to experience this. Also, most of the story is taken within space and on other planets. However in cyber-punk, the story would be found on Earth and not in space.
